Wellness & Vaccinations

Wellness and preventive care are the keys to keeping your pet healthy and include:

  • Vaccinations
Vaccinating your pet is a relatively inexpensive but essential way to protect his or her health. They also prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases (diseases that can spread from animals to people), such as rabies and leptospirosis. We can talk about your pet’s lifestyle and risk factors for each disease and come up with a personalized vaccination program for your pet.

  • Flea and Tick Prevention
Fleas and ticks are not only irritating to your pet, but can also cause them to become severely ill. Ticks carry many diseases including Lyme disease, ehrlichia (tick fever), Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, babesia, and anaplasmosis. Fleas can cause an allergic reaction on your pet, give them tapeworms, and can be difficult to get out of your house once they’re in. We can help you choose the best flea and tick preventive for your pet and your budget—just ask!

  • Heartworm Prevention
Heartworm disease is when worms live in the heart and pulmonary vessels of a dog or cat (more common in dogs). Since the worms can be a foot long and there can be hundreds of worms that live in the dog, it can cause significant damage to the heart and lungs, and if the disease progresses can result in death. Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes. This disease is easy to prevent, but potentially dangerous and expensive to treat. We recommend that all our canine patients be on heartworm prevention year-round. Call us for more information on heartworm testing and prevention.

  • Intestinal Parasite Prevention
Due to the curious nature of our pets, we recommend screening for intestinal parasites yearly. Most intestinal parasites are acquired from fecal matter in the environment (on walks, in the back yard, at parks or daycares). Intestinal parasites may cause vomiting, diarrhea, or weight loss, but many times our pets don’t show symptoms until they are infested with a heavy parasite load. Some of these parasites are transmissible to people, so it is important to us to keep both your pets and families safe.
